Do you have the tradition of
watching ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ this time of year? Did you know the film was
shot during a heat wave? It’s one of the most iconic Christmas films, yet the
snow was not even real. We often have the same situation in Oklahoma with no
snow during the holidays. But, Oklahoma does magically transform into a winter
wonderland each year at Christmas time with beautiful decorations and winter
activities. Here are some close destinations you can visit in our state this
holiday season. Your Christmas town is just a short drive away!
Guthrie
Just north of Edmond is the
historical gem of Guthrie where the preservation of an era is unmatched. From
the town’s American Craftsman and Victorian style homes to the date-stamped
downtown buildings, this town is a welcomed break from the everyday sights of
the OKC metro.
This month, make the short trip
for Guthrie’s Territorial Christmas. One weekend is set for the tour of
decorated homes and both weekends will include the famous Victorian walks,
where the residents are in period costume. The strolls downtown also include
live scenes in shop windows. Event scheduling can be found here https://www.guthriesterritorialchristmas.com/
Claremore
December 7th is the day to
visit Claremore for their Christmas celebrations. Enjoy a parade in downtown
from 5:30 to 7:00, then experience Will’s Country Christmas at Will Roger’s birthplace ranch.
And don’t forget to shop for
the people in your life with the unique selections in the quaint downtown
shops.
Kingfisher
Just a 40 minute drive,
Kingfisher is northwest of the OKC metro. This town boasts one of the most
popular light displays for visitors. The free event can be visited every night through December 24. A
night can be made of walking through over 60 light displays and 200 lit trees.
Grab a hot chocolate and a bite from a food truck to take along with you on
your stroll. Then take a photo on the swinging bridge while keeping an out for
Santa who is known to make appearances!
Oklahoma City Metro
And don’t forget the metro
areas for Christmas fun. The OKC downtown is always a favorite with snow tubing
and the Devon ice rink. Edmond has beautiful twinkling displays at Mitch Park, as well right next to the Bin There Dump That office at 3000 N. Kelly a beautiful walk-thru display has been created by Northwest Lawn Maintenance. And Yukon’s drive-through display brings
visitors from all over.
